RESEARCH DOCTORATE IN MECHANICAL, ENERGY AND MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING
CURRICULA: APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER


   

Research direction in Applied Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer of the Course of Doctorate in Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering resumes the historical course of the Doctorate in Technical Physics (year of first activation 1992) and the objective is forming  young  researchers  for development of  theoretical-experimental  research in the fields of the thermodynamics, thermo-fluido-dynamics and of the heat transfer; facing the research in the energetic field, by means of  correct methodological formulation of the thermodynamic problem; analyzing thermal, acoustic and luminous phenomena  cooperating to  define environmental comfort conditions, but also environmental impact and consequent opportunities of control.

The lenght of the Course is of three years, and during these years the Ph.D.student develops a research in the field of following issues:
1. Physics of the buildings and environmental control;
2. Energetics and applied thermo-fluid-dynamics;

The first one regards the scientific formation in the fields of the thermo-hygrometrical, acoustic and visual comfort,  physics of the building,  applied acoustics, lighting technique and conditioning techniques, in accordance with  the traditional approach of Environmental  Technical Physics.

The second mostly considers  the themes of energetics and thermodynamics,   thermal and mass exchange, applied thermo-fluid-dynamics and thermotechnics,  thermophysical properties of materials and measurements, in accordance with the traditional approach of Industrial Technical Physics.

The course of Doctorate in "technical Physics" was activated in the academic year 1988/89, in correspondence with the  IV  Cycle.
The administrative seat  was established inside the Department of Energetic Engineering, today TEC Division of the Mechanical Engineering, Energy, Production, Transport and Mathematical Models Department of the University of Genoa.
The Course of Doctorate, until the XI  cycle, was managed from the Union of the University of Genoa and Pisa, of the Polytechnic of Milan and the Polytechnic of Turin. From the  XII  cycle the University of Florence replaced  the University of Pisa
.

In the  X  cycle the Course of Doctorate assumed the denomination of "Technical Physics and Fluid-Engines" and was developed with the  contribution of the Institute of Engines and Energetic Systems. 
From the year of its activation until the 2003 all the candidates admitted to the final examination  achieved the title of Doctor of Research in Technical Physics.

The course therefore "produced" 31 Doctors of Research in Technical Physics, and the greater part of these  became part of our University: 2 are today assistant professors, 11 are university researchers, 5 have a "research scholarship". Remaining 13 Doctors found position in the world of the job, with the acknowledgment, even though partial, of the period of scientific formation inside our University and some prestigious foreign university centers. Some of these Doctors work in companies of the energetic field, others, for their plant-engineering and environmental competences,  found placing in public corporations or work privately. The interest for the Course of Doctorate from companies is also emphasized by means of the presence of numerous scholarships having an agreement with corporations external from academic world. 
Between achieved results is necessary to emphasize more than one hundred scientific papers produced from Ph.D.students, about issues in general integrated in the field of researches of  considerable national interest. In the last three years more than the half of Ph.D.students developed and is developing a period of research-study not lower than six months in: University of Maryland (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering), University of Nottingham (Dept. of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering), Fraunhofer Institut Solare Energiesystemen  of Friburgo, Laboratoire des Sciences de l'Habitat dell'Ecole National Des Travaux Publics di Lione (Doctorate in cooperation Italy-France). 

Nationwide since a long time are operating numerous courses of Doctorate in Energetics,  Technical Physics and Environmental Technical Physics, and the academic world make reference to these courses, also with activities of coordination  in home territory (like CODEA,  Coordination of Ph.D.students in Energy and Environment ), for the forming of young people wanting to enter upon a university career in this field. A satisfactory outcome with regard to this was obtained with the research Doctors educated in concluded cycles of Doctorate.  

Remarkable occupational prospects are possible also in the external extent, whether for not-university research, or for more professional aspects regarding  civil and industrial thermo-technical plant engineering, energetic systems, environmental control with its numerous thermal, hygrometrical, acoustic and visual aspects, like agreements stipulated with different corporations show. 
The employment possibilities  can make reference to companies working in the field of energy and thermo-technical plants, but also companies of the electronic, aeronautical, steel and iron, mechanical and nautical field,   interested to  take on staff for research and high-qualification design in the field of thermodynamical, heat and mass exchange  processes. 
The competences offered from the field of buildings physics and environmental control can also to come up to growing requirements of improvement of the comfort conditions for enclosures  whether from the point of view of design, or from the point of view of standards and control. These aspects proved to be very interesting for employment in public corporations, in companies oriented to environmental conditioning, and for private practice.

The course of Doctorate in technical physics includes a formative activity organized for 180 credits. The responsibility of the planning of formative activities and respective contents is of the Teaching Board.
In particular, in regard to didactic management are included 40-60 credits  in the following fields:
a) propedeutical training: it comprises courses for creation of common starting knowledges and for erasure of possible cultural gaps in essential extents for research. These courses will derive form lessons activated by Faculty for courses of degree.    

b) basic training for research: it regards courses expressly activated for research Doctorates with particular reference to basic issues, considerable for the field of industrial and environmental technical physics.   

c) specialistic training for research: short courses and specialistic seminars, laboratory-activities, about issues very interesting for the development of Doctorate-thesis.

Remaining credits (at least 100)  regard theoretical-experimental development  of research relevant to Thesis of Doctorate, its issue is defined and agreed with Teaching Board, consistently with the plan of research of Department  and in accordance with agreements and conventions with external corporations.
Didactic activity of Course is planned by the Teaching Board on the basis of curriculum vitae of graduate, (for training of kind a)), selected course and specific research activity (for training of kind c)). The formative activities of kind b) regard specific courses started up from Teachers of DIPTEM, courses started up in the School of Doctorate  of Polytechnic of Turin, in particular for the course of Doctorate in "Technological innovation for architecture and industrial drawing"in the Energetics Department, and courses started up in the School of Doctorate of Polytechnic of Milan, in particular for the course  of Doctorate in "Energetics" in the Energetics Department of Polytechnic of Milan.  Still in the training of kind b), the Ph.D.students partecipate in biennial course of Summer School of Thermo-Fluid-Dynamics, organized by Italian Union of Thermo-Fluid-Dynamics (UIT), with italian university teachers of the field of industrial technical Physics.
The plan of didactic activities is defined and approved by the Teaching Board before the beginning of activities of Doctorate. For every activity there is an evaluation of control. 
Didactic activities of the TEC Division of DIPTEM will be communicate to Faculty. The credits  relevant to didactic training must be achieved within the second year of course.
Research activities are developed by Ph.D. student beginning from the second semester of the first year of course, under the direction of  a teacher (Tutor) designated by Teaching Board. For development of particular researches there is a period of training inside foreign universities and laboratories  participating for quite some time  in scientific cooperations,  like for example:  University of Maryland (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Mechanics), University of Nottingham (Dept. Of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering), University of Paderborn (Wärme- und Kältetechnik), Laboratoire des Sciences de l'Habitat dell'Ecole National Des Travaux Publics di Lione, Fraunhofer Institut Solare Energiesystemen  di Friburgo. Besides there are agreements in progress with the Energetics Department of Polytechnic of Milan and Polytechnic of Turin for the development of  combined formative activities, in the field of courses of Doctorate of same Departments.
